The basic rule of Noir is that none of the characters are/ should be likeable . Each has some flaw or the other / some skeleton in the cupboard. That rule is assiduously followed here as Dhanwant tries to unravel the mystery and skeletons keep tumbling out of everyone’s closet be it the brother of the dead woman or even Garundi, who is the only character from Season 1 who continues in the Series. There are multiple threads to the story that seems complex at times but they all come together in the final episodes.
I deliberately don’t want to say except that this is surely one of the best serials about life in smaller towns and villages where everyone knows everyone’s secrets and exposure is feared , as reputation is more important than anything else . The real life locations in small towns and by lanes, add authenticity to the overall story. The serial also makes more than a passing comment on the conditions of laborers , most of whom are from the economically backward states. That they are used as bonded / slave laborers , with minimal or no safety or concern about their lives soon becomes apparent as through Dhanwant we see what’s happening .
It may be a TV Serial but it surely reeks of harsh reality in small town Punjab. The photography aptly illustrates the overall gloomy feeling , especially the night scenes as we know that some serious evil lurks out there in the night. The writing is superb with layer after layer of characters and their motives being exposed gradually.
Highly recommended with superb all-round performances from everyone. Watch out for Jaideep Ahlawat in a blink and miss appearance (some favor to someone?)
