Plot: In the late 1980s/ early 1990s, drugs are flooding Britain and teenagers die of overdoses in both poor income and rich areas. Under pressure from PM Margaret Thatcher, the Home Secretary authorizes a secret undercover unit from Customs as the import of drugs is supposedly the domain of Customs and not Coast Guard or Police. Don, a former undercover officer forms a team, after whittling down multiple applicants. The team of four members, all Customs officers and absolutely bored with their work, consists of Guy, the black Bailey, Erin who forms the back-office support because of her skills with data analysis and Kate. Erin analyses that London’s Turkish underground and Liverpool are the areas to focus on. With the help of a Greek criminal Mylonas who agrees to turn informer for the Customs and promises them a way in to the Turkish gang led by Hakan, Guy goes in and starts his work. Bailey and Kate handle the Liverpool end. Don, warns Guy, that he MUST be the “legend” and can’t be “off” the legend and says that the ”legend” may take over completely. They have only three months and the same budget to crack the ring and stop drug shipments flooding Britain ..
There are two reasons I binge watch any serial. One it is so boring that I want to finish it as quickly as I can. Two , its so good that I can’t resist to find out “what’s next” as the story gets increasingly interesting. This 6-part TV series is cracking good and the tension never lets up as to what’s about to happen. Especially when you know that most of the story is true and there is a real Guy Stanton “out there” who wrote a book. Details of his life are available NOW, since its 35 years since the real undercover operations happened.

Despite knowing the outcome , the 6-part TV series is absolutely thrilling. There are hardly any car chases or explosions; this is all about careful planning and looking at the tiniest detail so that one’s cover is not exposed. Sophie once checks Guy’s clothes and finds a ticket that would surely point to fact that “Stanton” was not as per his “legend” – the fictitious story that is created and that can stand up to any deep enquiry by the opposition. As Don keeps telling him, he can’t pretend to be the legend; he HAS to be the legend and it WILL affect him in the long run.
It’s clear that it’s the overall teamwork that’s required to bring about a success story and there is no James Bonds or Ethan Hunts or Jason Bourne, who blow up the world. Anyway, they wouldn’t have probably lasted a single minute in this setup 🤣 while the real Stanton bored his way deep into the criminal underground and was credited with multiple takedowns as per the story.
The series however focuses on the high-pressure tasks undertaken by the team, especially Stanton, after Thatcher is challenged about what she is doing about the scourge of drugs and is within that time period when she stepped down as the leader and handed over to the next leader, (John Major).
This is a superb “spy – adjacent” story; the techniques used, especially the one about a deep “legend”, is no different than those used by spies, spying in foreign countries; here the enemy is just closer to home and the techniques of gathering information by the spy is similar. Yes – there are some “masala” moments to dramatize the incidents but these are very few and can be overlooked as the overall pace is cracking good and it’s a spy story cum police procedural – in this case a “Customs” procedural. (Suggest to keep subtitles ON as the accents are not “Kings English” but more Cockney and Liverpool which are somewhat difficult to follow without subtitles, especially the “criminals” from Liverpool – I turned it on and kept it on , halfway through E1).

Hi Rammesh,
Have added ‘Legends’ to my list, after reading your review.
British crime procedurals are a welcome change from the usual American and Indian shows in this genre.
The recent ‘Mobland’ (Pierce Brosnan) was a blast!
Some others listed here, though I have not seen any of them.. but they look great!

Hi Robin
Thanks for that link; will check it out. Typically British and European crime shows have less guns and more plotting, though there are some exceptions.
